Installation Method of Fan Blade for Cummins Diesel Generator

The fan is a crucial component of the cooling system in a diesel generator set. The assembly of a fan in a diesel generator set utilizes the rotation of the fan to draw cold air through the radiator, thereby enhancing heat dissipation capacity, accelerating the cooling of cooling water, and further reducing the temperature of the generator set. So, how to properly install the fan of the cooling system for a Cummins diesel generator set?

I. Install the Wind Deflector

To improve the cooling efficiency of the diesel generator set, a wind deflector is installed on the radiator to ensure uniform distribution of air flow through the radiator core. Meanwhile, it concentrates the air flow passing through the fan and minimizes air backflow. Since the radiator is mounted on the frame and the fan is assembled on the diesel generator, the vibration borne by each part is different. Therefore, a gap of 15~20mm should be maintained between the end of the fan blade and the wind deflector.
The air volume of the fan is specifically related to its rotational speed, diameter, blade shape, number of blades, and blade installation angle. Typically, the number of blades ranges from 4 to 7, and they should be installed at an inclination angle of 30°~45° with the rotating plane of the fan during installation. This inclination angle is designed to optimize the air-pushing efficiency, ensuring that the fan can generate sufficient air flow to meet the heat dissipation requirements of the generator set under various operating conditions.

II. Adjust the Drive Belt

To reduce vibration and noise generated by the blades during air blowing, the blades are often installed at unequal angles to each other. Some diesel generator sets are also equipped with rubber shock-absorbing blocks between the fan and the connecting flange, which are used to absorb the torsional vibration of the crankshaft. This not only protects the fan blades but also prevents them from breaking due to the impact of torsional vibration.
The fan drive belt must maintain a proper tension. If the drive belt is too loose, slipping will occur between the belt and the pulley, resulting in a decrease in the rotational speed of the fan and water pump, which adversely affects the heat dissipation effect and easily causes damage to the drive belt. If the drive belt is too tight, it will increase the lateral force on the water pump bearing, accelerating the wear of the water pump and the drive belt. Most Cummins diesel generator sets adopt an idler pulley to automatically adjust the tension of the drive belt, ensuring stable and reliable operation of the fan system.

III. Notes

The following points should be noted when using the fan of the diesel generator set to ensure safe operation and extend the service life of the fan:
  1. Do not rotate the diesel generator by pulling or prying the fan during use, as this may cause serious personal injury or damage to the fan blades. The fan blades are rotating parts, and improper operation may lead to blade detachment or personal entanglement accidents.

  2. Do not attempt to repair broken, bent blades or blades lacking balance weights, as this will damage the dynamic balance of the fan. Once the dynamic balance is destroyed, the fan will generate severe vibration during operation, which may affect the overall stability of the generator set and even cause damage to other components.

  3. Do not try to increase the air supply capacity by bending the blades. Bending the blades will increase the stress on the blade material, leading to fatigue damage of the blades and even sudden breakage during operation, which poses a great safety hazard.

  4. The fan of the Cummins diesel generator set adopts a double-layer supporting plate manufactured by stamping and riveting. During the operation of the diesel generator, the direction of the fan assembly should be predicted according to the principle that the concave arc surface of the fan blade is the wind-pressing surface, consistent with the rotation direction of the fan. Never install the fan in the wrong direction; otherwise, the non-wind-pressing surface of the fan blade will become the wind-pressing surface, which will significantly reduce the air volume of the fan and affect the heat dissipation effect of the radiator, further leading to overheating of the generator set.
