Fire Prevention Measures for Diesel Generator Sets
Source:   Author:

As the saying goes, "fire and water have no mercy." As core power equipment, diesel generator sets involve multiple fire hazards during operation, and it is crucial to implement strict fire prevention measures to ensure the safety of equipment, personnel and property. The following are the key fire prevention requirements and operating specifications:

Diesel, the fuel used in generator sets, is a flammable and combustible liquid. Its vapor can form an explosive mixture when mixed with air at a certain concentration. In addition, the high temperature generated during the operation of the generator, the electrical sparks of electrical components, and the improper operation of operators may all trigger fire accidents. Therefore, it is necessary to strictly abide by the following fire prevention measures to eliminate potential hazards.

1. Basic Fire Prevention Requirements

① The generator room must be kept clean and tidy, free of flammable and combustible materials (such as gasoline, diesel, rags soaked in oil, etc.), and the distance between flammable items and the generator set shall not be less than 5 meters.
② No open flames are allowed in the generator room and around the generator set, and smoking is strictly prohibited.明显的 "No Open Flame" and "No Smoking" signs shall be posted in prominent positions.
③ The generator set shall be installed in a well-ventilated, dry and fire-proof area, away from flammable and explosive facilities (such as oil depots, gas stations, etc.), with a safe distance of not less than 10 meters.

2. Key Fire Prevention Measures

  1. Equipment and Environmental Fire Prevention: The generator set shall be equipped with fire-fighting equipment (dry powder fire extinguishers, CO₂ fire extinguishers) as required, and the fire-fighting equipment shall be checked regularly to ensure it is available and effective. The generator room shall be equipped with fire-proof doors, and the walls and floors shall be made of non-combustible materials to prevent fire spread.

  2. Fuel Storage and Management: Diesel fuel shall be stored in a dedicated explosion-proof fuel tank, which shall be placed in a well-ventilated, fire-proof and anti-collision area, away from the generator set and electrical equipment. The fuel tank shall be sealed tightly to prevent fuel leakage; fuel refueling shall be carried out in a well-ventilated environment, and open flames shall be strictly prohibited during refueling. Spilled fuel shall be cleaned up in a timely manner.

  3. Operation Standardization to Avoid Fire Hazards: It is strictly prohibited to overload the generator set for a long time, which may cause overheating of the engine and electrical components, leading to short circuits and fires. It is strictly prohibited to modify the generator set without authorization (such as changing the circuit, increasing power, etc.), so as to avoid electrical failures and fire accidents caused by abnormal operation.

  4. Electrical Fire Prevention: Regularly check the electrical lines of the generator set, eliminate hidden dangers such as line aging, loose connections and short circuits; the electrical components shall be selected with flame-retardant and high-temperature-resistant materials to prevent electrical sparks from igniting flammable substances. For the electrical system of the generator set, a leakage protection device shall be installed to avoid fire caused by electrical leakage.

3. Emergency Disposal of Fire Accidents

① Once a fire is found, the generator set shall be shut down immediately, the power supply shall be cut off, and the fire-fighting equipment shall be used to put out the fire in time (dry powder fire extinguishers shall be used for electrical fires, and water shall not be used directly to avoid electric shock and fire spread).
② If the fire is large and cannot be controlled, call the fire alarm immediately, evacuate the on-site personnel in an orderly manner, and take measures to prevent the fire from spreading to surrounding facilities.
③ After the fire is extinguished, the cause of the fire shall be investigated in time, hidden dangers shall be eliminated, and the generator set and related equipment shall be inspected comprehensively before restarting to avoid secondary fires.

4. Summary

The fire prevention of diesel generator sets is related to the safety of life and property. It is necessary to establish a sound fire prevention system, strictly implement fire prevention measures, standardize operation procedures, regularly inspect and maintain equipment, eliminate potential fire hazards in a timely manner, and ensure the safe and stable operation of the generator set and the surrounding environment.
