The continuous working hours of a diesel generator depend on the unit type, load condition, maintenance status and operating environment, and are not a fixed value. Conventional standard units need to stop for rest regularly, while high-power fixed units can achieve 24-hour continuous operation, but they must meet strict operation guarantee requirements. Details are as follows:

I. Continuous Working Hours by Unit Type

1. Standard Small-Sized Units (≤20kW, mostly open-frame/mobile type)

This type of unit is mainly used in scenarios such as household use, small shops and temporary construction. Its design focuses on flexibility rather than long-term continuous operation. It is recommended to control the continuous working hours within 8-12 hours, then stop for 1-2 hours before continuing operation.
Core reasons: The heat dissipation system of small-sized units is relatively simple, and long-term operation is likely to cause excessive water temperature and oil temperature; at the same time, the tolerance of components such as the engine cylinder block and piston is limited, and continuous high-load operation will accelerate wear and shorten the service life of the unit. If it is necessary to extend the continuous operation time under special circumstances, it is recommended to reduce the load to below 70% of the rated power, and the continuous operation shall not exceed 16 hours to avoid overload and overheating.

2. Medium-Sized Units (20kW-100kW, fixed/silent type)

Medium-sized units are mostly used in scenarios such as small factories, farms and main power supply for construction sites. They are relatively well-equipped, and the continuous working hours can be extended to 12-24 hours. It is recommended to stop for inspection and rest for 2-4 hours every 24 hours.
Key points for attention: During operation, real-time monitor the water temperature (controlled at 80-95℃), oil temperature (not exceeding 90℃) and oil level to ensure the normal operation of the heat dissipation system and lubrication system; if it is in high-load operation above 80% for a long time, the continuous working hours need to be shortened to within 12 hours to avoid engine carbon deposition and component aging.

3. High-Power Fixed Units (≥100kW, mostly silent/industrial grade)

This type of unit is designed for industrial use, suitable for scenarios that require long-term uninterrupted power supply such as factories, data centers and hospitals. It can achieve 24-hour continuous operation, and even more than 72 hours of continuous operation (subject to specific conditions).
Core guarantee conditions: It is necessary to be equipped with an efficient forced heat dissipation system (enhanced water-cooled/air-cooled), automatic lubrication system and automatic fuel supply device; at the same time, special personnel should be arranged on duty to check parameters such as oil, fuel, water temperature and oil pressure every 4-6 hours and deal with abnormal situations in a timely manner.

II. Key Factors Affecting Continuous Working Hours

1. Load Rate (Core Influencing Factor)

The load rate directly determines the working load of the unit and has a great impact on the continuous operation time:
  • Low-load operation (≤50% rated power): The unit load is small, heat generation and wear are slight, and the continuous working hours can be extended by 30%-50% on the basis of the standard;

  • Rated load operation (70%-100%): The continuous working standard of the corresponding unit must be strictly followed, and it shall not be extended at will, otherwise it is easy to cause engine overheating, oil deterioration and component damage;

  • Overload operation (>100%): Long-term overload is strictly prohibited. Even short-term (within 1 hour) overload will seriously damage the unit and even cause failure.

2. Heat Dissipation System Performance

Diesel generators generate a lot of heat during operation, and the efficiency of the heat dissipation system directly determines their continuous operation capacity:
  • Open-frame units: Rely on natural air cooling, with limited heat dissipation efficiency and short continuous working hours, which need to be further shortened in high-temperature environments;

  • Silent units: Adopt a closed canopy design, equipped with forced air-cooled/water-cooled systems, with better heat dissipation effect, which can support longer continuous operation;

  • High altitude and high temperature environments: The heat dissipation efficiency will decrease, and the continuous working hours need to be shortened accordingly, or auxiliary heat dissipation equipment should be added.

3. Lubrication and Fuel Supply

Engine oil and fuel are the "blood" for the continuous operation of the unit, and their supply and quality directly affect the operation time:
  • Engine oil: Special diesel engine oil that meets the unit requirements should be used. Regularly check the oil level and oil quality. If the oil deteriorates or is insufficient, stop the machine immediately for replacement and supplement, otherwise it will cause serious wear of the engine;

  • Fuel: Ensure sufficient fuel to avoid running out of fuel during operation; at the same time, the fuel needs to be filtered clean to prevent impurities from entering the engine and affecting normal operation. For high-power units with continuous operation, it is recommended to equip an automatic fuel supply device to achieve uninterrupted fuel supply.

4. Unit Maintenance Status

Units with regular maintenance have small component wear and high operation stability, and their continuous working hours can reach the design standard; if maintenance is not timely (such as blocked air filter, aging spark plug, loose belt, etc.), it will lead to increased unit operation load and intensified heat generation, and the continuous working hours will be greatly shortened, even leading to fault shutdown.

III. Professional Operation Suggestions (Extend Continuous Working Hours + Protect the Unit)

  1. After the unit starts, run it at no load for 3-5 minutes. After the water temperature and oil temperature reach the normal range (water temperature above 60℃), gradually load it to avoid direct load operation of the cold engine;

  2. During continuous operation, real-time monitor the operation parameters (water temperature, oil temperature, oil pressure, voltage, frequency). Once an abnormality occurs (such as excessive water temperature, low oil pressure), stop the machine immediately for inspection;

  3. For units with long-term continuous operation (more than 24 hours), a comprehensive inspection should be carried out once a week, replace the oil filter and air filter, and check the belt tension and battery status;

  4. In high-temperature environments, a sunshade can be added and heat dissipation fans can be increased to reduce the ambient temperature and improve heat dissipation efficiency; in severe cold environments, it is necessary to keep the unit warm and use low-temperature adapted engine oil and fuel;

  5. Avoid frequent start-stop. Frequent start-stop will accelerate component wear and affect the continuous operation capacity of the unit. It is recommended to reasonably plan the operation time and reduce unnecessary shutdowns.
