How to Store Diesel Generators for Long-Term Non-Use

Proper long-term storage is crucial to protect the performance and service life of diesel generators, avoiding faults such as corrosion, component aging, and startup failure caused by long-term inactivity. The core storage requirements include fuel treatment, oil replacement, battery protection, moisture-proof shielding, regular crankshaft turning, and suitable storage environment. Detailed professional operation guidelines are as follows:

1. Fuel Treatment: Prevent Deterioration and Blockage

Diesel will undergo oxidation and deterioration after long-term storage, producing colloids and sediments that can block fuel filters, injectors, and fuel pipelines, leading to difficult startup or engine damage. Two feasible treatment methods are provided, and the appropriate one can be selected according to the storage duration and fuel reserve:
  • Drain all fuel (recommended for storage over 6 months): Run the generator at no load until the fuel tank is empty and the engine stops automatically, ensuring that there is no residual diesel in the fuel tank, fuel pipelines, and injectors. After draining, close the fuel valve to prevent air and moisture from entering the fuel system. The drained diesel can be filtered and reused if it is not deteriorated; otherwise, it should be properly disposed of according to environmental protection requirements.

  • Add fuel stabilizer (suitable for storage within 3-6 months): If it is not convenient to drain the fuel, add a professional diesel stabilizer (in strict accordance with the product manual ratio) to the fuel tank, then run the generator at no load for 10-15 minutes to ensure the stabilizer is fully mixed with the diesel. The stabilizer can inhibit fuel oxidation, prevent colloid formation, and keep the fuel in good condition during storage.

Note: Before storage, check the fuel tank for leaks and clean the sediment at the bottom of the tank to avoid corrosion of the tank inner wall.

2. Oil Replacement and System Protection: Avoid Wear Caused by Deteriorated Oil

The engine oil in the generator will absorb moisture and impurities during operation. If it is left in the engine for a long time, it will corrode the cylinder block, piston, crankshaft and other components, and lose its lubrication performance. Therefore, oil replacement is a necessary step for long-term storage:
  • Replace engine oil: Run the generator for 5-10 minutes to make the engine oil warm (facilitate full discharge of impurities), then shut down and drain the old engine oil completely. Replace it with new engine oil that meets the specifications, and ensure the oil level is within the standard scale. The new oil can form a protective film on the surface of engine components, preventing rust and corrosion during storage.

  • Replace oil filter: Synchronously replace the oil filter while changing the engine oil to avoid impurities remaining in the old filter from polluting the new oil and affecting the protection effect.

3. Battery Protection: Prevent Power Loss and Damage

Batteries have a self-discharge characteristic. If they are not handled properly during long-term storage, they will be in a state of deep power loss for a long time, leading to plate sulfation, which will permanently damage the battery and make it impossible to charge and use. The specific operations are as follows:
  • Disconnect the battery: First, fully charge the battery (ensure the charge is above 80%), then disconnect the negative electrode cable (to avoid self-discharge and electrical system leakage). For units with two batteries connected in series (24V), disconnect the negative electrode of each battery separately and做好 insulation protection of the terminals to prevent short circuits caused by contact with metal parts.

4. Cover and Moisture-Proof: Prevent Corrosion and Component Damage

Moisture is one of the main factors causing corrosion of generator metal components (engine, alternator, electrical system) and aging of rubber parts (belts, hoses). Therefore, effective moisture-proof and shielding measures must be taken:
  • Clean the unit before storage: Wipe the surface of the generator with a dry cloth to remove dust, oil stains and water stains, especially the electrical control panel, terminals and other parts, to avoid moisture causing short circuits.

  • Professional covering: Use a special generator cover (waterproof, dustproof, corrosion-resistant) to fully cover the unit, ensuring that the cover is tightly fitted and there is no gap. Do not use plastic cloth directly to cover the unit, because plastic cloth is not breathable, which will easily cause moisture to accumulate inside and accelerate corrosion.

  • Moisture-proof in the storage environment: Place a moisture-proof agent (such as silica gel desiccant) around the unit, especially in humid areas, to absorb ambient moisture and keep the air dry.

5. Regular Crankshaft Turning: Avoid Component Seizure

After the generator is stationary for a long time, the piston, valve, crankshaft and other components will be in a fixed position for a long time, and the engine oil on the surface will gradually volatilize, which may lead to adhesion or seizure between components. Regular crankshaft turning can solve this problem:
  • Operation frequency: Turn the crankshaft once every 15-30 days. For units with manual crankshaft turning, use a crank to turn the engine crankshaft 2-3 full circles (clockwise) to make the engine oil evenly distribute on the surface of each friction component, forming a protective film.

  • Key points: Before turning the crankshaft, ensure the generator is shut down, the power supply is disconnected, and the fuel valve is closed to avoid accidental startup. If the crankshaft is difficult to turn, do not force it to avoid component damage; check whether there is rust or jamming and deal with it in time.

6. Storage Environment Requirements: Ensure Long-Term Stability

The storage environment directly affects the storage effect of the generator. The following requirements must be met:
  • Dry and ventilated: The storage room should be well-ventilated to avoid moisture accumulation; the relative humidity should be controlled below 60%, and avoid storing in basements, low-lying areas or places prone to water accumulation.

  • Constant temperature: The ambient temperature should be kept between 5℃ and 25℃. Avoid long-term storage in extreme high temperature (above 40℃) or extreme low temperature (below -20℃), which will accelerate the aging of rubber parts and damage the battery.

  • 远离 harmful substances: Keep the unit away from corrosive gases (such as sulfur dioxide), chemicals, and flammable and explosive materials to avoid corrosion of metal components and potential safety hazards.

  • Anti-theft and anti-collision: Place the unit in a safe and fixed position, avoid collision and damage to components; for mobile units, lock the wheels and fix the trailer to prevent theft or displacement.

7. Professional Storage Notes

  • Before storage, conduct a comprehensive inspection of the generator, check for oil leakage, water leakage, and loose components, and repair them in time to avoid deterioration of faults during storage.

  • Record the storage start time, maintenance items (fuel treatment, oil replacement, etc.) and battery charging time to facilitate subsequent inspection and restart.

  • When restarting after long-term storage, first check the fuel, oil, battery, and electrical system, then run the generator at no load for 10-15 minutes to check the operation status, and load it after confirming normal operation.

  • For generators stored for more than 1 year, in addition to the above measures, it is recommended to disassemble and inspect key components (such as injectors, fuel pumps) before restarting to ensure they are in good condition.
